If gallery backup is enabled, that copy can be backed up again. WhatsApp’s Manage storage does not clean that second copy.

Review the gallery after the in-app cleanup instead of assuming both copies are gone. Forwarded images often repeat there, while long chat videos are easier to spot when the gallery is sorted by size.

How do you stop WhatsApp storage growing again?

Open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. Turn off automatic downloads for the network types and media categories you do not want. New photos and videos will remain available in the chat, but WhatsApp will wait for you to choose what to download.
