What Is Taking Up Space on My Android? How to Actually Find Out

Read the built-in breakdown first

Settings → Storage (wording varies slightly by manufacturer) charts your space by category: Images, Videos, Apps, Audio, Downloads, System. That chart tells you where to spend effort — if Images and Videos dominate, cache-clearing will not move the needle.

The usual hidden bulk

  • Chat media: messaging apps saving every received photo and video to the gallery — check the app’s own storage manager (for example Settings → Storage and data inside the chat app).
  • The Downloads folder: installers, PDFs, and forgotten files that never expire on their own.
  • Screen recordings and screenshots: large, numerous, and rarely needed twice.
  • Duplicate photos from re-saves, edits, and multiple chat groups sharing the same image.

Where did my deleted photos’ space go?

Gallery apps keep a trash: Google Photos holds deleted items for up to 60 days before the space returns. After a cleanup, open the gallery’s Trash/Bin and empty it to get the gigabytes back now.

See it file-by-file

Star Cleaner’s storage analyzer maps what is actually on the device — largest files first, media grouped by similar and duplicate, screenshots and screen recordings in their own piles. Everything is scanned on the phone; nothing uploads. The scan is free and shows the reclaimable total before you delete anything.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Android show system taking so much space?
The System category bundles the OS, preinstalled apps, and reserved space. It is largely fixed; your recoverable space lives in media, apps, and downloads.
Do I need an SD card instead of cleaning?
An SD card adds room on phones that support one, but it does not remove the junk — duplicates and dead downloads just get more space to live in. Cleaning first makes any storage bigger.
Is it safe to delete everything in Downloads?
Review it once: most contents are installers and documents you already used. Anything an app still needs, the app stores elsewhere.
