How to Free Up Space on iPhone Without Deleting Photos You Love

Empty the trash you forgot exists
Recently Deleted (in Photos under Utilities — inside Collections on current iOS, under Albums on older versions) holds up to 30 days of deletions at full size. Emptying it deletes nothing you have not already deleted once.
Which photos can go without losing anything?
Exact duplicates are byte-for-byte or visually identical copies: the same photo saved twice from a chat, re-downloaded, or re-edited. Removing a copy loses nothing. iOS finds some of them in the Duplicates album under Utilities; a dedicated cleaner also groups near-identical bursts so one shot per moment stays and the rest can go in a single confirmed pass.
Compress videos instead of deleting them
Video is the densest storage on the phone. Re-encoding a rarely-rewatched video at a more efficient bitrate keeps the memory and releases most of the space — see our full guide on compressing instead of deleting.
Offload apps you rarely open
- 1.Open Settings → Apps → App Store (Settings → App Store on older iOS).
- 2.Turn on Offload Unused Apps — iOS removes the app binary but keeps your data and documents.
- 3.Reinstalling later restores the app exactly where you left it.
Clear the caches that quietly grow
Safari keeps history and website data — clear it from Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data (Settings → Safari on older iOS). Streaming and social apps hold their own caches; for the worst offenders, deleting and reinstalling the app is the reliable reset.
Frequently asked questions
- Will offloading an app delete my data?
- No. Offloading removes only the app itself; documents and data stay on the phone and come back when you reinstall.
- Does clearing Safari data log me out of websites?
- Yes — clearing website data removes cookies, so you will need to sign in again. History and cache are removed too.
- How do I keep one photo from a burst?
- Star Cleaner groups near-identical shots by moment; on iPhone the kept photo of each group is protected from selection, so keeping one shot per moment is the default rather than manual work.
