What does each Google Photos delete action do?

Read the action label before confirming: Delete from device means local-only, Free up space means eligible backed-up local copies, and the ordinary Delete action affects the account and synced devices. Do not use synchronization as a cleanup safety net.

A backed-up copy is not necessarily the original file. With Storage saver backup quality, Google Photos resizes photos above 16 MP to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p. The backed-up copy is an original only when backup quality is set to Original.

• The ordinary Delete action removes an item from the Google Photos account and from this device at the same time. If the item was backed up, the same content is also removed from every device with backup turned on.
• Deleted items first go to trash for 30 days, which provides a recovery window. Emptying the trash permanently destroys its contents and is the point of no return.

How should you remove actual duplicates?

2. 2.Find exact duplicates by full-content hash. Matching filenames or dimensions are clues, but only matching file content proves two files are identical.
3. 3.Keep one verified copy from every exact-match group. Only exact duplicates are safe to preselect mechanically.
4. 4.Review any visually similar group yourself, then confirm the deletion mode for each copy. Never assume a backed-up copy will survive an ordinary Google Photos Delete action.

Why do similar photos need a separate review?
